Welcome to another issue of the Team Spotlight series at LayerX, a very special one, may we say!
Today, we bring Helder Vasconcelos to the Team Spotlight, where he shares insights into his role as CTO & Co-founder and takes us through the early days when the idea behind TAIKAI and LayerX started taking shape 🔥
Without further ado, let's meet Hélder 👇
In 2017, while leading a tech team at a traditional finance company, my colleagues and I began engaging in passionate discussions about cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and decentralized technologies during our coffee breaks. Their enthusiasm ignited my own interest, and I quickly became eager to explore the emerging web3 space. At that time, the ecosystem was still in its infancy, with only three major blockchains—Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron—gaining traction.
By 2018, I met Mário, who had a compelling idea for an innovation network based on token incentives that quickly attracted my attention. After many insightful conversations and brainstorming sessions, we decided to join forces and build the foundations for what would eventually become the TAIKAI product. Looking back, it feels like just yesterday that we were sketching out the core mechanisms of the TAIKAI economy on a whiteboard.
At LayerX, what I appreciate most about our culture is the openness in communication. Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas, and feedback freely, which fosters a collaborative and transparent environment. We value the freedom to explore and innovate, allowing team members to contribute creatively and actively participate in product decisions that ultimately shape the direction of the business. There’s no rigid hierarchy here—everyone has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the company’s goals. Additionally, we are committed to providing all collaborators with the tools and support they need to grow both professionally and personally.
You can really sense the strong feeling of belonging during our company gatherings—everyone is genuinely friendly and supportive of one another. We put a lot of effort into creating a positive and welcoming work environment, knowing that we spend a significant amount of time together working toward our shared goals. It’s important to us that this atmosphere fosters collaboration and keeps everyone motivated and connected.
My responsibilities as CTO have evolved over time. In the early stages, I was heavily involved in coding and designing the foundational architecture of the product. This was a critical phase, as getting the foundation right early on helps minimize technical debt, allowing for faster iterations and quicker time-to-market for key features.
Nowadays, my role is more focused on overseeing product design, reviewing code, and ensuring that the architecture scales effectively. I've seen my responsibilities shift from hands-on technical work to a higher-level strategic role as the company has grown, ensuring that we continue to innovate while maintaining a strong technical backbone.
As a key technology leader, I rely on several strategies and resources to stay up-to-date with web3 developments. I frequently follow trends on platforms like Hacker News, which offers a pulse on emerging technologies. Attending key industry events such as DevCon and ETHCC is another critical component, as these gatherings provide valuable insights, networking opportunities, and exposure to the latest advancements. I also stay connected by following influential accounts on Twitter, reading research papers, and diving into open-source code to understand and contribute to cutting-edge innovations directly.
It's hard to pick just one project, as we've consistently delivered amazing features that make me proud. A few highlights include the Proof of Participation and the Voting Card Checkout for TAIKAI, which were both pivotal in enhancing user interaction. For Bepro, we completely revamped the product, elevating it from a clunky experience to a polished, user-friendly platform. The introduction of Bepro’s Multichain support was another milestone for me. However, the project I’m most proud of is the tech stack design. It laid the groundwork for us to scale our products quickly, securely, and reliably, enabling the rapid evolution of all our initiatives. A good foundation is crucial in software development.
I believe adoption is progressing steadily, and what excites me most right now are the innovations happening in the DeFi space, Zero Knowledge technologies, and Chain Abstraction. The DeFi space continues to evolve, unlocking new possibilities for decentralized financial systems. Zero Knowledge technologies, particularly in terms of privacy and scalability, are poised to address some of the biggest challenges in web3. Additionally, Chain Abstraction innovations are vital in creating more seamless and user-friendly experiences across different blockchains.
While the web3 ecosystem is still fragmented, I think it's crucial to focus on improving integrations between Layer 1 and Layer 2 chains. These advancements will make the entire space more interoperable and accessible, ultimately driving broader adoption.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, my advice would be to remember that the journey is far from easy. It will take a lot of sweat, tears, and resilience, and you need to be prepared for both the highs and lows. There will be days when things go smoothly, and days when everything feels like a challenge.
You also need to be ready to wear many hats—handling everything from marketing, business, and sales to financials and tech. Flexibility and multitasking are essential. And most importantly, remain humble and open to learning from others.
Another key factor is surrounding yourself with bright, capable people. A great team is crucial to success, as many startups fail due to a lack of talent and strong minds. Build a team you can rely on, and remember, no one achieves success alone.
In the next five years, I believe the evolution of the corporate and web3 market will be largely driven by the continued expansion of DeFi as a foundational technology for transferring value. DeFi will become more deeply integrated into corporate operations, with more businesses adopting these decentralized financial primitives for everything from payments to capital raising.
Another trend I foresee is DePin (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks) gaining momentum, although the exact timing is still uncertain. This will open up new opportunities for decentralized networks that power physical assets, making the web3 space even more versatile.
Additionally, I expect to see a surge in gaming marketplaces built on web3 technologies. As gaming continues to evolve, more decentralized platforms will emerge, enabling true ownership of in-game assets, digital currencies, and player-driven economies. This shift will drive further adoption and innovation within the web3 ecosystem.
Recently, I took a step back in my career to explore new areas, particularly around finance and investments. One concept that caught my attention is the Markowitz Model, also known as Modern Portfolio Theory. First published in the Journal of Finance in 1952, it revolutionized how we think about risk and return in investment portfolios. Harry Markowitz's groundbreaking work earned him the Nobel Prize in 1990, and it remains a cornerstone of investment strategy today.
As someone who has always been fascinated by numbers, this model has been particularly engaging for me. It’s a reminder of how foundational principles, even when developed decades ago, continue to shape modern financial thinking. I find it fascinating how these theories help in balancing risk and optimizing returns, and it's been an exciting area for me to delve deeper into.
I’d like to share how incredibly proud we are of what we’ve accomplished over the past few years. Our team is truly one of the most talented groups I’ve ever worked with, and together, we’re committed to pursuing our grand vision. Since our first meeting in 2018, we’ve been dedicated to contributing to the Web3 builder ecosystem, and we continue to push the boundaries of innovation in this space.
One thing I always keep in mind is the importance of staying humble. It's essential to remain open to learning, both as professionals and as individuals. Always be eager to evolve, embrace new challenges, and keep pushing forward, because growth comes from constantly evolving and adapting.
We're excited about the future and the impact we’re going to make in the web3 ecosystem.
